One-Day Concealed Handgun Permit Training Course Offered
Alvin Community College will host a one-day concealed handgun training course on Saturday, Jan. 10, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. This class is designed for people desiring qualification to obtain a permit to carry a concealed handgun. This is not a class for someone who does not know how to safely operate and fire a handgun. Tuition fee includes photographs, notarizing of required documents, fingerprinting, target, ammunition, and certificate fee. The cost is $90. There is an additional state licensing fee. Alvin Community College will host a one-day concealed handgun renewal class on Saturday, Jan. 10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This class meets state requirements to renew a Concealed Handgun License. One-day Pen & Ink Oil Rouging Class Offered
A one-day class in Mary Owens Pen & Ink Oil Roughing will be offered at Alvin Community College on Jan. 10. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Mary Owens Pen & Ink Oil Rouging method involves tracing a pattern, filling in detail lines and adding color using a technique called “rouging.” The technique can be done on different surfaces such as canvas, wood, glass, paper, tin and more. Welding Classes Available
Alvin Community College will offer introductory classes in TIG and stick welding beginning on Jan. 12, Mondays and Tuesdays, from 6 to 10 p.m. The 16-session TIG welding course will provide the principles for the safe use of gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) equipment. The 16-session stick welding course is designed for the farmer, rancher, artist or handyman who needs to safely perform the most basic welding operations. It is also intended for the entry level student who may decide to pursue further education and a career in welding. LEARN Courses for Adults with Disabilities Available
The Alvin Community College LEARN Project will offer a six-week course for adults with disabilities beginning on Jan. 13. Each six-week session is different and unique and participants can learn skills in money management, functional reading, food and nutrition, social interaction, vocational preparation and much more. Guest speakers and field trips are often included. The courses are designed primarily for individuals with some form of mental retardation. It is the mission of the ACC LEARN Project to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to learn skills that will allow them to become more independent in their daily lives. Classes will be held each Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $60 per session for in-district residents and $75 for out-of-district. ACC Holds Auditions for Spring Musical ‘Snoopy!!!’
The Alvin Community College Speech and Drama Department will hold auditions for its spring musical production, “Snoopy!!!” created by Charles N. An aerobics class for senior adults, over 50 years old, will be offered at Alvin Community College Jan. 20 through April 16. ACC Offers Karate Classes
Alvin Community College will offer karate classes for children, ages 5 to 12, at Mary Marek Elementary, in Pearland, beginning on Jan. 21 and at the ACC main campus beginning on Jan. 22. Classes at Marek Elementary will be held on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., through April 8. Classes at ACC will be held on Thursday evenings, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., through April 9. GED Classes Offered at Pearland Center
GED classes will be offered at the Alvin Community College Pearland Center beginning on Jan. 26 and 27. Students will receive instruction in the five subject areas which are included on the GED test and may choose from day and evening classes. Tuition is $57 for in-district students and $72 for out-of-district students. A textbook and calculator must be purchased at the ACC College Store. ACC Offers Teller Training Course at Pearland Center
If you are interested in becoming a teller in a bank, credit union, or other financial institution, the Alvin Community College Continuing Education Workforce Development Department is offering its next training class at the Pearland Center beginning on Jan. 27. Students will learn the important skills and information needed to be a successful bank teller, including the teller’s role, basic qualifications of a successful teller, standard procedures for receiving and paying out cash, standard parts of a check, comparison of genuine and counterfeit currency, recommended procedures to employ during emergency situations, attitudes that make up good customer service relations and methods of cross selling. The cost of the course is $235 for in-district residents and $250 for out-of-district. Latin Dance Lessons Offered at the Pearland Center
The Alvin Community College Pearland Center will offer Latin dance classes beginning on Jan. 27 and 29. Salsa classes will be held on Tuesdays through March 3. The class for beginners starts at 7 p.m., followed by a class for intermediate students at 8 p.m. Merengue and Bachata classes for beginners will be held Jan. 29 through March 5, on Thursdays, from 7 to 8 p.m. An intermediate class to learn Salsa dips and tricks will follow from 8 to 9 p.m. Each class costs $65 for six sessions. ACC Athletic Department Hosts 6th Annual Golf Tournament
The Alvin Community College Athletic Department will host its 6th Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, March 23, at Southwyck Golf Club in Pearland. Funds raised from the event will be used toward scholarships and other needs for the ACC women’s softball team. Entry fee for the four-person Florida Scramble tournament is $100 per individual player or $600 for Gold Team participation. Gold Teams will be recognized with a sign or banner on the golf course, on the tournament sponsorship board and during the awards ceremony. All entry fees include the driving range, cart and green fees, lunch and dinner, admission to the contests and a goodie bag. Hole and tournament sponsorships are also available. Southwyck Golf Club in located at 2901 Clubhouse Drive. Late registration will be accepted on the day of the event. ACC Holds Summer Children’s Theatre Festival Auditions
The Alvin Community College Speech and Drama Department will hold auditions for its Summer Children’s Theatre Festival on May 13-14, at 6:30 p.m., in the main campus theatre, 3110 Mustang Road. Callbacks will be held May 18. The first summer show will be performed June 22-25 and the second show will be July 27-30. Over 60 children participated in the festival in 2008.
